Philology- workin' on it!

Okay, so last Thursday was supposed to be my first philology class. It was at 7 so I woke up at 5:30 AM. I get to the building with minutes to spare. I'm fed, I'm in the right building- I'm even slightly awake. Things are lookin' up. However, when I arrive at the room in question (Letras 114) there seems to be a decided lack of philology classes currently meeting. Like zero. Whereas I was expecting at least one. I as the first student I see what class we're in. He says English. I ask him if he knows where philology is supposed to meet. He says he's blind.

So I asked a blind guy for directions. Not the best sign.

I run around Letras trying to get a hold of a schedule or something. I look at all the doors where they have posting of the classes that are held in that room. Nuttin'. I go upstairs to the school of philology offices and there's a big listing with all the classes, times, dates, and rooms.

Intro to Philology - 0700-950 M 0114
Now for those of you who speak English as a first language (myself included) that M might not mean a whole heckuva lot. But in this case it meant that I had woken my ass up at 5:30 for pretty much nothing. M stands for Miercoles which is Wednesday. For some reason I had gone about the last 3 weeks thinking that my class was on Thursday. So not only had I needlessly awoken at an monk-worthy hour, but I had arrived 24 hours too late to my first class.

I can imagine some people being pissed or embarrassed at the situation at hand. Me, I was pretty surprised. In essence I just received the punch line of a 3 week practical joke I had played on myself. I wandered across campus giddy and with my mouth open. I was aware of how ridiculous I must've looked to the other students which only made me laugh more.

But all was not lost. I figured I should probably find a new class, seeing as how I skipped out on the one I signed up for. I find out that there's a theater class meeting at the same time as my imaginary philology class so I make it there, this time only 40 minutes late. A marked improvement over my last attempt.

The class is awesome and (because I can't legally take two art classes) I decide to audit it. I'm still hanging onto my philology class, so now I have one less free day and one more 7 am class. But still, I think it'll work out okay. If not, I can always sleep through it.

So in conclusion, I still have no idea what philology really is. I'll let you know tomorrow, assuming everything goes as planned.

Hi Ezra,

So glad your Dad sent us your blog site. Loved reading about your experience and still not knowing what philology is. I found myself laughing out loud as I read this. You are TOO CUTE!! We'll be checking in regularly now to read what's happening. Actually this is my first time on a blog. Thanks,I'd rather it be yours than anyone's.

Love,

ezra, I'm hella confused. If the thing said M, why did you go on thursday? i would think you would have been 48 hours early for your class. Unless you celebrate the new day: mmmmthursday. I think McDonalds is trying that one out. Anyway, glad things seem to be going ok. I just thought I'd let you know that I pushed an old granny off the sidewalk the other day and I thought of you.

love,
Forrest
